Sports Betting Line Moves and Top Trends for Oct. 24
By Doug Upstone
We have another Thursday of sports betting action in all the different sports. There is college football, the NFL, the World Series and the NHL. Studying line moves can become a very profitable venture if you know what to look for.
NFL – (103) CAROLINA at (104) TAMPA BAY 8:25 ET NFLN (side and total)
For this Thursday night encounter, Carolina opened as 3.5-point road favorite and jumped to -6 before settling at -5.5. It is clear Tampa Bay is brutal at 0-6 and has only beaten the betting odds once. The Panthers 3-3 record is not overly impressive, but why this line makes sense is because Carolina is +56 in point differential, which is fourth-best in the NFC. Know this, the ‘Cats are 11-1 ATS away in Games 5-8 if their opponent is off a SU and ATS loss. Update – The money is pouring in on Carolina and the OVER. The Panthers are now at -7 and the total is up two points to 40.5, with the last four Thursday night matchups either 4-0 OVER or 3-0-1. The bets are coming in 3-to-1 on the action as stated. SWM Take – Lean with Carolina and Under
CFB – (105) KENTUCKY at (106) MISSISSIPPI STATE 7:30 ET FOX
Either Mississippi State looks irresistible or Kentucky appears appalling, as the Bulldogs have gone up 2.5-points since last night to -12. Mississippi State was off last week and likely refreshed, while the Wildcats have injury problems which 12 days between games are not going to repair. With the elevated number, Kentucky slides into unsavory territory at 0-7 ATS as an underdog of 10.5 to 21 points the last two seasons. SWM Take – Lean with Mississippi State
CFB – (107) MARSHALL at (214) MID. TENEESSEE STATE 7:30 ET FS1
After being stationary most of the week, Marshall is being bet like a thundering herd, roaming from -8.5 to -9.5. Those making sports picks notice the Herd is only allowing 18.3 PPG and wonder how Middle Tennessee State will be up trying to score points with Marshall who is at 36.2 PPG. The key to the game for coach Doc Holliday’s team is reaching 28 points, since the Blue Raiders are 0-7 ATS in home games when they allow 28 or more points. SWM Take – Marshall covers
NHL – (61) WINNIPEG at (62) NASHVILLE 8:05 ET TSN
Nashville prefers a more defensive-style of game, but they are only averaging 1.9 goals a game and were shutout in their last contest 2-0 at Minnesota. Nashville coach Barry Trotz was less than pleased with the effort. “We just didn’t come out with a lot of energy,” Trotz told the team’s official website. “We didn’t manage the puck very well, we lost too many battles.” Hockey bettors are presuming the Predators will do what they usually do after such a showing and taken them from -125 on the money line to -140. The Preds are 15-3 after scoring one or fewer goals in their next contest. SWM Take – Nashville wins
