The AFC East Meets the NFC South on Monday evening as the New York Jets tangle with the Detroit Lions. This contest will take place at 7;00 pm ET at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan. The Jets went just 5-11 last year, while the Lions were at 9-7. Both teams have very high hopes for this year. These teams last met back in 2014 and the Lions beat the Jets on the road by a score of 24-17.

Lines:  Detroit -6.5… Over/Under 44.5

A Look At The Jets

The New York Jets haven’t been to the playoffs since 2010, and their offense has been one of the worst in the league in five of the last six years, but they have hope for the future. The Jets took Sam Darnold with the 3rd overall pick in this year’s draft and he is slated to get the start in this one. They should improve on a passing offense that was 24th in the league last year. They also added WR Terrelle Pryor through free agency and TE Chris Herndon through the draft. The receiving corps is pretty solid, and the running game will be improved with the addition of running back Isaiah Crowell.

With a better offense, that should make the defense better as well. This defense has struggled the last few years, but it was not all their fault as the offense constantly put them in bad positions. They brought in defensive back Trumaine Johnson through free agency and also took defensive lineman Nathan Shepard with their 2nd pick in the draft. The Jets were 25th in the league in yards allowed and 22nd in points allowed last year, but with an improved offense, they should greatly improve on those rankings this year. They may still be a year away from playoff contention, but they are a team on the rise and will look to get off to a good start this year.

A Look At The Lions

The Lions went 9-7 last year and have now had three winnings seasons in the last four. They have a new head coach in Matt Patricia, who has won some Super Bowls as defensive coordinator of the Patriots. He knows how to win and has inherited a team with some solid pieces on it. Matthew Stafford has put up some big numbers in his career and for the most part, he has done it without a running game. That will change this year as they brought in LeGarrette Blount, who has won two Super Bowls with the Patriots and one with the Eagles last year. They also have added Kerryon Johnson with a 2nd round pick in the draft and he looked good in the preseason.

Stafford finally has a good running game to work with and that should make him all the more effective as he plays catch with golden Tate and Marvin Jones. This offense could be scary, but they will be taking on a very tough defense in the opener. The defense really struggled last year, but with Matt Patricia as their head coach, that should change this year. Patricia has done well against rookie QBs and should have a nice game plan against Sam Darnold. This will be a good test for both teams.
