Sports Betting Line Moves and Top Trends for Oct. 10

By Doug Upstone

On Thursday, we have an intriguing collection of sports to choose from and those making sports picks have money-based opinions on all of them. Studying line moves can become a very profitable venture if you know what to look for.

NFL – (101) N.Y. GIANTS at (102) CHICAGO 8:25 ET  NFLN

Since Monday, the total on this NFC confrontation has been like bread rising in the oven, lifting from 46 to 48. The thought process has to be each defense is unlikely to stop the other and both quarterbacks are turnover-prone, which could lead directly to points. Consider this also: Teams like the Giants, rushing for 70 yards or less a contest, against a team with rushing defense allowing 95-125 yards a game, are 9-2 OVER the past two years. Update The total has begun to regress a bit, with most sportsbooks at 47.5 and few even lower at 47. Nonetheless, nearly 80 percent on the action is on the OVER.  SWM TakeLean Under

CFB – (103) RUTGERS at (104) LOUISVILLE 7:30 ET  ESPN

Louisville has not be tested this season and takes on Rutgers who is two points away from also being unbeaten. The Cardinals feature Heisman candidate Teddy Bridgewater, but could be without their best receiver DeVante Parker (shoulder). Louisville has an ample supply of pass catchers and Bridgewater usually distributes the ball around anyways, which is why those betting football flew the Cards from -16.5 to -19. Louisville is no lock since Rutgers averages 40 points a game and can move the ball. The ‘Ville however is 7-0 ATS against teams that have a win percentage of 75 percent or higher. MLB – (955) DETROIT at (956) OAKLAND 8:05 ET  TBS

In a bit of a surprise move, Bartolo Colon did not get the call for Oakland in the series finale and instead rookie Sonny Gray (5-3, 2.61 ERA) will be the starter. Gray blanked Detroit over seven innings in their 1-0 victory in Game 2 of the series. He will again face Justin Verlander (13-12, 3.51), who also kept the A’s off the scoreboard in his seven innings of work. In his past three playoff starts versus Oakland, Verlander has a miniscule 0.39 ERA, allowing just one run in 23 innings, while fanning 33 Oakland hitters. With this as the backdrop, the total has sunk from U7 to U6.5. The Tigers are 20-6 UNDER on the road when the total is seven or less since last season. SWM TakeLean with Under

NHL – (67) SAN JOSE at (68) VANCOUVER 10:05 ET  CSCA, RSNV

The hockey season might be young, but this is already the second meeting of these two Pacific Division partners. Vancouver will be the home team this time around and has won three in a row. The Canucks were a -120 money line favorite and have been flipped to a +105 underdog against San Jose. The switch is simple for hockey bettors, the Sharks have won eight straight, including the season opener and sweeping Vancouver in the playoffs last spring. SWM TakeLean with San Jose
